Why Bhajans are important to your Soul
By Abhishek Mule · Oct 8, 2026 Your phone has 47 notifications. Your mind has 470. Your soul has had none in weeks. We charge our phones every night without fail. We service our cars, top up our data packs, and never miss an EMI. But when did you last recharge the one thing that runs all of it — you? For thousands of years, our elders had an answer that cost nothing, needed no app, and worked in any kitchen, temple or train compartment. They sang bhajans. Not as a performance or a ritual to tick off, but as a daily charge for the soul. Here is why that old habit may be exactly what your restless, overconnected life is missing. A bhajan is not a song. It is a conversation. The word bhajan comes from the Sanskrit root bhaj — to share, to belong, to adore. That tells you everything. A bhajan is not music you listen to. It is devotion you take part in. From Meera's longing for Krishna to Kabir's fearless dohas, from Tukaram's abhangs echoing through the Pandharpur wari to Tulsidas's verses for Ram, bhajans have always been the people's prayer. You did not need Sanskrit, a priest, or a perfect voice. You only needed a heart willing to sing. 5 reasons your soul needs bhajans 1. They switch off the noise in your head You cannot sing "Om Jai Jagdish Hare" and worry about your inbox at the same time. Try it. The mind can hold only one thing fully, and a bhajan gently takes that seat. For a few minutes, the overthinking simply has nowhere to sit. 2. They slow your breath — and your breath slows you Every long "Raaaam" and every stretched "Hariii" makes you breathe out slowly and deeply. Researchers studying chanting and repeated prayers have noticed the same thing: rhythmic devotional recitation tends to slow breathing to a calm, steady pace. Our rishis did not have the lab reports. They had the results. 3. They turn strangers into family Walk into any bhajan sandhya and watch. The rickshaw driver and the retired judge clap to the same taal. The teenager on her phone ends up singing the chorus. Singing together is one of the oldest ways humans bond, and a bhajan does it in one evening what a hundred WhatsApp groups cannot. 4. They hand you words for feelings you could not name Some days you are too tired to pray, too hurt to explain, too grateful to put it into words. On those days, Meera, Kabir and Tukaram have already done it for you. A bhajan lends you a voice when your own runs out. 5. They shrink the ego and grow the heart A bhajan is never about me. It is always about Him — or Her, or That. The moment you sing someone else's glory, your own problems quietly get smaller. That is not escape. That is perspective. Start small: a 10-minute bhajan habit You do not need a harmonium, a guru or a free Sunday. Start here: 1. Pick one bhajan you already know. The one your grandmother sang counts. Familiar words open the heart fastest. 2. Give it the first 10 minutes of your morning — before the phone, before the news. 3. Sing it, do not just play it. Hum if you are shy. Your voice is the point, not your sur. 4. Join one satsang or bhajan sandhya a month. Singing alone heals you; singing together holds you. 5. Notice how you feel afterwards. Lighter? Calmer? Kinder in traffic? That is your soul saying thank you. Sing before the world tells you who to be The world will spend all day telling you what you lack. A bhajan spends five minutes reminding you of what you already have. So tomorrow morning, before you unlock your screen, unlock your voice. Sing one line. Then another. Let the old words find their way home. Your phone will still be there. But for once, so will you. Which bhajan takes you straight back to your childhood? Share it in the comments — let's build a playlist for every tired soul out there. — Abhishek Mule
